Maastricht is part of a worldwide network of Shelter Cities for human rights defenders. Twice a year, our town welcomes a human rights defender in need and gives him or her shelter and support for 3 months.

The program is a collaboration between Justice & Peace Netherlands, Maastricht municipality, Maastricht University, Amnesty International Maastricht and Mondiaal Maastricht, and it has run successfully since 2015.

During their stay, the human rights defender (or “HRD”), is offered safety and relaxation, capacity building opportunities (such as classes and training), opportunities to expand their network and raise funds and support with telling their story to a wider audience in schools, universities and during lectures.

By strengthening human rights defenders, we support human rights elsewhere. We believe that this is a great way to work on SDG#16 Peace Justice and Strong Institutions.

Volunteers wanted!

We are always looking for volunteers who would like to become a buddy for the HRD, or support the program in other ways. Please contact us for more information.
